Enfermedad viral en dos formas, canina y felina.

El distemper canino es agudo y sumamente contagioso, y afecta a perros, zorros, lobos, visones, mapaches y hurones. La mayoría de los casos no tratados son mortales. El mejor tratamiento para los animales infectados son inyecciones inmediatas de seroglobulinas; las infecciones secundarias se detienen mediante antibióticos. Se puede conferir inmunidad por vacunación. El distemper felino causa una leucopenia grave en el gato infectado. Rara vez dura más de una semana, pero la tasa de mortalidad es alta. Las vacunas ofrecen una inmunidad efectiva.
